Laundry & Stains

Colors running:  Add 1/2 cup of salt to the wash cycle to prevent colored fabrics from running.

Stains:  Aspirin can remove a perspiration stain from white fabric.  Dissolve 2 tablets in 1/2 cup of warm water and apply to the stain.  Let it sit for about 2 hours before washing.

Dryer:  Even if you clean your dryer vent screen before every load, the residue from dryer sheets can build up (can lead to a dryer fire) and clog your screen to the point it can actually hold water.  The solution is to check to see if it will hold water and if it does, clean with a soapy solution and brush, then rinse and allow to dry completely before using.

Clothes Stains:  Murphy Oil Soap makes a great laundry pre-spotter, especially on organic stains like grass or blood. Wet washable, colorfast fabric, add a drop of Murphy directly to the stain, squish through the fabric and wash as usual.

Red Wine stains:  Immediately blot up all moisture from red wine spill, then sprinkle the area with salt.  Let sit 15 minutes .  The salt should absorb any remaining wine (turning pink as a result).  Then clean the area with a mixture of 1 part white vinager and 2 parts water.

Ink:  Table salt will absorb ink when it is spilled - pour salt on the wet ink and continue to add salt until there is no more "wet ink". Then vacuum or wash. Other types of ink can be removed using rubbing alcohol.

Carpet stains or burns:  Cover stains or burns in your carpet with matching crayon. Rub it into the spot, cover with wax paper, and lightly iron on low heat.
